Some Blows are Heavy
In Progress
Some Blows are Heavy continues Soren’s focus on the tension between the visible and invisible seen in Surface Tension. The new project examines the things we see and those that we willfully discard. These unique works often depict scenes that are painful to process, creating an internal struggle for the viewer who is at once transfixed and wants to turn away.
This innate contradiction is embraced and present in the images. Layering techniques and a language of obfuscation and blurred vision are deftly employed so the subject matter can be encountered slowly, each moment unfurling as new perceptions and realizations emerge.
Each composition from the series begins with a traditional photograph that incorporates visual elements only captured through the technology of a camera. A lens flare, an obliterating reflection, and an amplified light source conspire to block our sight and understanding. Ink and resin are then applied to the image and allowed to build and pool, compounding the viewer’s blind spots and blending the artificial lines between painting, sculpture, and photography.
The physical choreography of the surface combines the documentary and the handmade, and the intimacy of scale and raised texture lend to close looking. As we traverse the picture, energy builds and swells, merging opposing moments of sublime and peril, beauty and horror, and excitement and fright, never letting go of either sensation.
For Soren, Some Blows Are Heavy is the natural progression from Surface Tension, in which she shot photos through a screen. Now, Soren creates the screen by hand on top of her photographs and further investigates factors of agency and subjectivity.
